The Ins and Outs of the Most Simply Complicated Award

A look into possible Grammy winners for Album of the Year 2025
The Ins and Outs of the Most Simply Complicated Award

Before we know it the red carpet for the 2025 Grammys will be rolling out and the students of DHS will get to see if their favorite artists will win big.

While the official nominees have not come out, it has been a huge year of music releases for many big artists, so the competition will be tight. It feels like everyone’s favorite artist could be in the running and people are already predicting who they think could win. An article from the site Medium outlines who they think could be front runners.

The ultime switch up, Cowboy Carter Beyoncé’s eighth studio album and a possible Grammy nominee.

An anticipated 8th album by singer Beyoncé, Cowboy Carter is described as a genre bending sound unique to many others that have been released. This album has catchy tunes but has the ability to gain the votes of R&B, Country, and Hip-Hop fans as they may have slimmer pickings because of the amount of Pop albums released this year.

eternal sunshine, a huge success for Grande, with one of the biggest singles of the year “yes and?”

Speaking of pop albums Ariana Grande released her seventh studio album this year eternal sunshine with a catchy and high charting single “yes, and?” Grande showcases her out of this world vocals and beautiful lyricism.

As we all know, Taylor Swift has been a powerhouse at the Grammys, having previously taken home four Album of the Year titles, and people think she may be able to gain another one with her album The Tortured Poets Department that has been dominating the charts for weeks on end and breaking records with its streaming debut. So, whether you love or hate her she has a great shot at a nomination.

Another woman the Grammy’s have seemed to love is Billie Eilish, she has swept the general field categories back in 2020 and now with her new album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT the chances are in her favor as the Doolittle describes the album “has everything Grammy voters could want: commercial success, exceptional production, and — perhaps primarily — the assurance that most won’t argue with the choice.”

A possibly unexpected prediction, Higher, slipping into people’s lists.

Switching genres, another article from Billboard, describes a long time country music artist, Chris Stapleton and his fifth album Higher that has a chance at a nomination. Having a previous nomination with Traveler he couldbe the first country male solo artist with two nominations in this category. Not to mention the album’s lead single ‘White Horse’ already won two Grammys in February.  He also already had an amazing run at the Academy of Country Music Awards with ‘Higher’ winning album of the year.

Other albums that could make the cut are: brat by Charli XCX;  We Don’t Trust You by Future & Metro Boomin; Coming Home by Usher; Tyla by Tyla; Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves, as well as many others as you never know what can happen at the Grammys.

The popular vote among DHS students for Album of the Year, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.I asked Darien High School students who they think should win Album of the Year 2025, and got 77 responses with a lot of varying answers. The most popular answer among DHS students was The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan with 20 votes, with our runner-up being HIT ME HARD AND SOFT by Billie Elish with 16 votes. Some other favorites were: ‘eternal sunshine’ by Ariana Grande; brat by Charli XCX; and The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift.I also added an “other” option as there were definitely big albums I missed in my list and there were some popular responses like: Vultures 2 by Kanye West; Charm by Clario; The Great American Bar Scene by Zach Bryan; We Don’t Trust You by Future and Metro Boomin; and Don’t Be Dumb by A$AP Rocky.

But when the Grammys roll around it’s important to know how decisions are made, according to the Recording Academy, record companies and members of the Recording Academy will submit entries during their eligibility year. These entries will go to reviewing sessions with over 350 music experts that will make sure the entry is in the right category and fits the correct criteria.

An object all artists would love to have: A Grammy!

Then they have a first round of ballots, where members can vote in 10 categories across 3 genres, in theory it should be the genres they are experts in, as well as 6 general categories like Album of the Year or Song of the Year. Once the nominations are determined, members vote again in 10 categories across 3 genres, but now vote in only 4 general categories. The ballots are then counted and announced at everyone’s favorite award show: The Grammys.

They keep going! Taylor Swift is on her 14th Grammys and surely has more to come.

In that same poll, I asked what students thought about the 2024 winner Midnights by Taylor Swift, and I got a ton of varying answers. Many said they liked the album and thought it deserved to win. Others just do not like Taylor Swift or her music, but a good majority had other options they thought should win. Many said albums like: SOS by SZA; Guts by Olivia Rodrigo; or ‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd by Lana Del Rey deserved the award way more or were just overall better albums.

But for now all we can do is make predictions be sure to tune into the Grammys Sunday, Febuary 2nd at 8 p.m. EST to see if your favorite artist won.
