Food Rescue US

Food Rescue US is “a software solution that fights two of our world’s most pressing issues: the environmental impact of food waste and the societal damage of food insecurity.” Said Haley Schulman, the website coordinator.  At Food Rescue US, you can use their user friendly website to find locations near you to rescue some food! It is super simple and fun.  By using their website, you can sign up for rescues.  Then you can pick up the food from local businesses and bring it to different locations, the Darien location being Person to Person.  Food Rescue is currently working with Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Pasta Vita, to ensure their excess food is provided to people in need rather than end up in a landfill.  This organization is more important than ever because more than 40% of foods are thrown away in the US.  This is a huge waste of money and precious resources.  In addition, food in a landfill does not decompose like you may think.  It releases harmful methane gases which are damaging to our ecosystem.  Fun fact:a head of lettuce takes 25 years to decompose in a landfill!

Ways to Volunteer:

I think this may be the easiest way to volunteer.  All you need is a car, some friends, and some music to jam out to as you go rescue food and the environment.  All details to complete a rescue are listed on their website and you can track you hours, most rescues only take 30 minute! If you don’t have a car but still want to make an impact, Food Rescue US encourages students to start clubs in school focused on their organization, and even inform the administration and the cafeteria staff of how DHS can become part of their organization.  Finally, the easiest way to show your support is liking, following, and sharing on IG:@foodrescueus.fc and FB:foodrescueusfc.
