The Darien Library’s 10th Anniversary: A Great Place for Our Community

It’s Not Just a Place to “Study” for Exams

The children’s library is one of the most magical places in the library itself

Ever since the Darien Public Library reopened on the Post Road in 2009, it has been a big part of my life. The old library near the Darien Sports Shop was a great place for young me, but the fact that it moved even closer to my house was amazing.  The amount of media you can borrow is astounding. “The Library is a major hub in the community” said Teen Librarian Mia Orobana. “Without a community, there wouldn’t be a library”

What makes the Darien Public Library so special? According to Teen Librarian Mia Orobana, it’s the librarians who make the library experience so special. “Our staff really are something else. We try and go above and beyond and do whatever we can to make our patrons’ days, and I think people can feel that when they stop by the Library” Most people can agree that the staff at the library are very kind and helpful.

The library recommends great books each month on this table. This month, there are books based on mental health May

The people who go to the library also make it special. Many people in Darien have donated to the library and you can see the names of the donors in the library’s entrance.  “The community brings the Library together as much as we bring the community together” said Orobana.

For two years, I was a part of the teen advisory board. I highly recommend it if you want to plan fun events for your fellow students and meet new people. It also looks good on your resume, whether or not you take a leadership position within the group.

During the year, we plan events for teenagers such as the teen talent show, cookie decorating, movie nights, etc. Our big event of the year is the teen talent show. Every year, we ask three adults in the community who we think could be the judges for the show.

It’s really fun to take a back seat and let the Teen Advisory Board take control and make the event their own” I have had a lot of fun being a part of the teen advisory board because the kids who are in it are so nice and we all want to start great activities for people our age. We order pizza and plan events out for months ahead. One of our events was making a terrarium I have a friend who was able to teach his own origami class to other high school students. His origami was featured in the December 2017 print issue.

This library reinvigorated my love to read. The librarians are so friendly and help you find whatever books you want to read.  I love the Darien Public Library so much and I hope it continues to be a place for people.
