Blindfolded in The Movie but Most Viewed in Real Life

You have probably heard of the movie ​Bird Box​ by now. It has gotten millions of views on Netflix and has inspired people to create many memes about it. If you have never seen a horror movie before and you don’t want to jump into a really scary movie, then ​Bird Box​ might be a good choice for you.

The movie starts out with the character Malorie (Sandra Bullock) who is blindfolded and rowing a boat with two blindfolded children named Girl and Boy. Nobody knows why they are wearing blindfolds but there is obvious fear on their faces. Then the movie jumps back in time to when Malorie is pregnant and is getting a checkup at a hospital. All of a sudden, people start going crazy and killing themselves. It is soon apparent that there is a mysterious force that when you look at it, you will be tempted to kill yourself. Malorie and a couple of others seek refuge inside a house and cover anything that can show the outside. It seems like a great plan, but what will they do when resources run low, and will they invite just anybody in? The mentally ill seem to be the only people who won’t kill themselves when they see the force, yet they are controlled by the force because they are compelled to make everyone see it. Eventually, all hell breaks loose and Malorie, Girl, and Boy are forced to go on a journey through woods and dangerous river currents while blindfolded, to get to a sanctuary that supposedly is where they will finally be safe. Throughout the movie, Malorie and others end up facing many challenges. Their main challenge is surviving.

There has been a lot of debate and differing opinions on whether or not Bird Box​ is a good movie. Some say that it was a copy of T​he Quiet Place because ​The Quiet Place​ is about a family that must be silent or dangerous creatures that hunt by sound will find them. Some people also say the only reason why ​Bird Box​ was good is because Sandra Bullock was in it. However, others say that it left them on the edge of their seat the entire time. Critic Bryan O’Donnell from “25 Years Later” says “The thought of going through rapids on a boat while blindfolded gives me extremely high levels of anxiety, and this scene definitely had me on edge.”

In my opinion, some parts of ​Bird Box w​ ere captivating but the majority of the movie was mediocre. What I did not like about the movie was that I didn’t find it frightening. I have not seen many horror films, but throughout most of the movie, I was not scared. The acting also was not that great. The critic Sonia Cercia from “A Film A Day” agrees with me as she states “Bullock looks disinterested and bored as if she didn’t want to be in the film, and fails to deliver the emotions, pain, and struggles of Malorie.” I was also puzzled by the fact that not all people killed themselves when they saw the force. It seemed that only the mentally ill could survive. However, if you are the type of person who does not like scary things then this is a great movie that might give you a few thrills.

Overall, If you are a person who craves scary things, then this is not the movie for you. While some scenes might give you some thrills, the majority of the movie is predictable and sometimes the plot may be confusing. The one thing that is very interesting about this movie is that if it is as bad as some critics say it is, then why is it one of the most watched movies on Netflix? ​ ​Watch trailer here!
