What began as a passion project by Riley Cavanna in 2022 has evolved into one of the school’s most interesting clubs. Now in its third year, the Geography Club transforms Room A205’s atmosphere into a lively one sparked by friendly competition.
“I wanted to help create a space where people could develop a deeper understanding of our world while having genuine fun,” says vice president Jamie Spataro.
The club meetings balance education with entertainment through interactive activities. Members engage in many competitions using geography games like Geoguessr, where players determine their location based on Google Street View images, and Globle, which challenges participants to identify mystery countries. Blooket challenges test knowledge of capitals, flags, and landmarks in a format that frequently fills the room with excited shouts.
Currently, the club is buzzing with anticipation as they prepare for the Connecticut State Geography Bee, taking place at UConn in May. “We’ve been intensifying our practice sessions and creating specialized study materials,” explains president Taylor Platt. “The Geography Bee is a full-day field trip that gives our members a chance to showcase their knowledge while connecting with students from across the state.”
Beyond competitions, the geography club features student-led presentations about specific regions of the world, highlighting lesser-known cultural aspects and geographical wonders that textbooks typically overlook.
Unlike some other academic organizations, the geography club maintains an open-door policy—no application required. Whether you’re a geography enthusiast who can name every country or someone who struggles to identify continents, you’ll find a welcoming community eager to explore the world together.
