New York sports fans are as ruthless as they come. From the Yankees to the Mets to the Knicks to the Nets, being “good” is never satisfactory.
One of the league’s oldest franchises, The New York Giants have stumbled through another turbulent season, leaving fans frustrated and analysts questioning the team’s direction. With a sputtering offense, a defense plagued by inconsistency, and mounting injuries, New York has turned what was once a hopeful campaign into a showcase of unmet potential. As the losses pile up, the Giants find themselves searching for answers—and a way to regain their footing in the NFL hierarchy.
On November 22nd, the team, sitting at an abysmal 2-8 and coming off of an overtime loss to the 2-7 Panthers, decided to release their former first-round pick, quarterback Daniel Jones.
The decision comes just days after the Giants announced they were benching their QB1, moving him down to the fourth quarterback slot on the depth chart. It was soon after that Jones went to owner John Mara and requested to be cut.
“Danny Dimes”, who had been with New York since 2019, signed a four year, $160 million contract extension in 2023 after leading the Giants to the NFC divisional game before losing to their division rival Philadelphia Eagles.
Since the contract was inked, New York has only won 8 games while losing 23. In that span, Jones has only thrown 10 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions in 16 games.
The Giants had somewhat good hopes for this season. After drafting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers sixth overall in this year’s draft. The rookie has been one of the lone bright spots on the roster this season, posting 819 yards and 3 touchdowns in 11 games.
Nabers has fallen victim to the injury bug however. He is one of many Giants to miss time due to injury this year. Defensive back Deonte Banks, linebackers Bobby Okereke and Kayvon Thibodeaux, and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence–whose season is over–all missed time this season due to injury. These four players are part of a Giants defense that has only had two interceptions all season.
Darien High School junior and Giants superfan Carter Hurst is not pleased with the Giants season so far.
“[This season] has been pretty awful. 2 wins, losing on blocked field goals, you name it, it happened,” Hurst said.
The biggest hopes Giants fans have is for the NFL Draft in April.
“Hopefully we get a quarterback,” Hurst said.
One of the highly sought after quarterbacks in this year’s draft class is Colorado’s Sheduer Sanders, the son of Deion Sanders and the man who threw Heisman Award winner Travis Hunter the football all season long.
The Giants looked miserable last Sunday, on December 15th, as they got destroyed by the Baltimore Ravens 35-14. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson threw 5 touchdown passes against the laughable Giants secondary, his second time reaching that mark this season.
Daniel Jones last threw for 5 touchdowns in 2019. Since then, he has not thrown for more than 2.
New York has had nothing go their way the past two seasons. With gunslingers like Sanders, Cam Ward, Quinn Ewers, and Jalen Milroe, it will be interesting to see what direction the Giants take, and if the team is able to correctly develop the young talent, which is where they dropped the ball with Daniel Jones.
