For those who won’t be able to attend the event in person, DAF Media, the YouTube channel that live streams many of Darien High School’s varsity sports matchups will be covering the Turkey Bowl for the seventh consecutive year.
In each of the past three years, the Turkey Bowl broadcast has reached over eight and a half thousand views on YouTube.
The broadcast, which will be a joint broadcast with New Canaan’s NCTV, and will feature students from both DHS and New Canaan High School operating cameras, instant replay, and graphics on the live stream. Students will also be directing, sideline reporting, and announcing the game.
This year, DHS juniors Owen Heffron and Lucas Balenzano will be joined by NCHS senior John Frieders on the mic announcing the game Thanksgiving morning.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a really long time…[the Turkey Bowl] is a game that can’t be written about or talked about, you have to truly be here to experience it.” Frieders said.
In addition to the livestream, DAF Media also recorded a pregame show a week prior to the storied rivalry contest. Frieders, Heffron, and Balenzano were joined alongside DHS junior Neev Sahgal as they hosted the show, where they discussed past Turkey Bowls, players to watch for the this year’s game, and other matchups across Connecticut.
“Announcing the game is already cool enough, but it’s so professional to be able to have a pregame show like this.” Balenzano said.
The Turkey Bowl is usually the most popular broadcast for DAF Media during the school year. It is also very official, with numerous graphics, cuts to reporters, and pregame and postgame talks with the announcers.
DAF Media adviser Damian Andrew believes that the Turkey Bowl is a great beneficiary to both New Canaan and Darien.
“It’s the biggest little game in America, certainly the biggest game in all of Connecticut,” Andrew said. “Two schools located just miles apart and there’s a lot of community involvement from both towns.”
Students, teachers, families, and all fans alike who can’t be at Darien High on Thanksgiving Morning can use the DAF Media stream as an opportunity to support either the Blue Wave or the Rams, even from afar.
