A Look at Laufey’s Dreamer: A Bewitching Review
In a world where house music and rap are at the top of everyone’s playlists, the once considered “old fashioned” style called Jazz has made its way back to the playlists, and to the top of the charts. Thankfully, Laufey has finally reintroduced Jazz to the contemporary world of music, and we love her for it.
The Icelandic singer gained popularity at the young age of fifteen as a cellist and a 2014 finalist on Iceland’s Got Talent. She later gained fame primarily through TikTok for her cozy fall Jazz songs, a music genre that young people aren’t as familiar with today. With a growing online presence, certain songs have gained more popularity than others. While, in my opinion, all Laufey songs are deserving of a listen, there are a couple that need more recognition for their clever instrumentals, and incredibly relatable themes.
Dreamer is a very classic sounding song, and shows the true musical talent that Laufey has to offer. The soft piano accompaniment allows for listeners to focus on Laufey’s stellar vocals, and highlight the song itself, rather than
overproduced. This style is similar to those of Ella Fitzgerald or Nina Simone. This musical masterpiece is severely underrated to other works that have blown up on social media.
While her more well known songs, such as From the Start and Letter to My 13 Year Old Self are both rhythmically and lyrically dynamic, Dreamer encapsulates the old timey magic that you don’t hear in today’s music. Dreamer is not only a hidden gem that young people should listen to, but it’s the perfect song for everyone of all ages to dance, sing or even fall asleep to.
