Tyler starts his 7th studio album with a bang, making songs the Tyler fans will love and some will hate. Songs like Runitup and Lemonhead act as diamonds in the rough and Wusyanane and Corso clouded the talent seen in other songs on the album. Overall, here’s what I think.
Sir Baudelaire: Correctly Hyped-
This is the debut song on Call Me If You Get Lost, and it is a great way to start a Tyler album. Tyler is renowned for his 2 styles, his aggressive lyrics coupled with his aggressive beat and voice. His other side involves a more relaxed, lyric-focused melody. Sir Baudelarie is a perfect example of his relaxed side, and a great way to begin one of his albums. The lyrics discuss places that are somewhat dystopian, guiding you into a world of good vibes. Overall, the song reached a little over 90,000,000 streams on Spotify, which makes it not his most successful on the album, but enough so for a stand out.
Corso: Over Hyped-
As a followup song for Sir Baudelaire, Corso is a debatable song. Corso is now looking at Tyler’s aggressive side. Overall, it’s one of the best streamed songs on the album; over 115,000,000 streams. So, at first, this song seems like a typical, consistent Tyler song that was bound to be on the album. Although, I feel it does not live up to those 115,000,000 streams. This song is almost too typical of Tyler, using similar beats and lyrics from songs such as Trashwang and Puppet.
Lemonhead: Under-Hyped
To keep the listener interested, as it’s difficult to listen to an album in one sitting, Lemonhead is a great addition to the album. Keeping the aggressive theme going, this was something different from Tyler. Tyler managed to stray away from his individualistic style and include a feature, 42 Dugg, that changed Tylers attitude in the music with a very traditional rap based schematic; discussing guns, drugs, and illegal activities. This was something different. So, why is it under-hyped? Among the album, it sits in the limited 100,000,000 streams range, which didn’t help it stand out as much as it should have. Also, it’s a very niche Tyler song, with almost no usage on social media. With that being said, I feel it is a niche Tyler song that shouldn’t be listened to more by the general rap music community.
Wusyanane: Over-Hyped
This is the most streamed song on Call Me If You Get Lost, with over 367,000,000 streams on Spotify. But, I feel they are not deserved. NBAYoungBoy, the feature on the song, is very aggressive in his music, more so than Tyler, while using the drugs, guns, and illegal activity themes in all of his music. Tyler tries to morph the artist into his relaxed, utopian image in his lyrics with an artist that is renowned for the complete opposite.
Lumberjack: Correctly-Hyped
This is a pretty interesting Tyler song, which didn’t receive as much attention as I thought it would. This is the first song on the album that seems to have a mixture of his 2 traditional styles. This involves his relaxed lyrics, but with his aggressive beat. Reaching over 149,000,000 streams on Spotify, this was one of Tyler’s most successful songs on the album. Although, it should not have anymore. This is something new from Tyler, a new style and combination, just like Wusyanane. Although, the difference was Wusyanane absolutely sugar coated and Lumberjack was more respectable. I feel Lumberjack has been completely saved, because it wasn’t the exact same scenario with Wusyanane.
Hot Wind Blows: Correctly-Hyped
Referencing Wusyanane in this article for the second time, this is Wusyanane but much improved. Hot Wind Blows is the third song with a feature on the album with Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne is an extremely universal artist, dabbling in any style of rap, while staying consistent with his punchy, innovative lyrics. So, when discussing Wusyanane, the song was paired with an artist that didn’t fit in the song. But, this song seems to have made a comeback. Lil Wayne has the reputation and style to fit on the track, under Tylers relaxed style. If anything, this song should be the redemption arc for Tylers features and should have received more streams than Wusyanane.
Massa: Over-Hyped
As much as it only received 75,000,000 streams on Spotify, I feel this song doesn’t even deserve that. Tyler combines aggressive lyrics combined with a soft beat. But, this time, they didn’t seem to mix as well as I hoped. It seems off, compared to Tyler’s remarkable consistency with his music. If anything, looking at it at Tylers point of view, he tried to make a song that would sit in that 300,000,000 stream mark by changing the flow of the album, but, he instead made a song that would in fact make most people stop listening to the album and leave.
Runitup: Under-Hyped
Another song on the album that sits with the 70,000,000 stream group, but it deserves more attention than most of the first songs on the album, and in my opinion, is the best song in the first half of the album. Tyler goes with his relaxed style, which has been most prominent throughout the album, so it keeps the originality going. He also includes a Teezo Touchdown feature, where he fits perfectly into the song. It almost seems to give a warm feeling in your chest that no other song on the album does. I believe it should have a much larger following and is easily one of the best songs on the album.
