Is DHS keeping up with the real trends? Not quite
Every Fall, Winter, and Spring the fashion genius’ like Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, and Tommy Hilfiger, put on shows to display their lines and predict the trends for the next season. Looks from Spring 2017 Fashion Week predicted the trends for Fall 2017 and have been circling the web ever since. Blazers, captains hats, and double denim were the biggest trends and most reflected by society this past fall.
However, not once did I see a student come to Darien High School with a blazer on, or a captains hat, or wearing double denim. If anybody in our school looked on Instagram they would see the models, actresses, and style icons dressed from head to toe in these styles, yet our school has failed to reflect theses timely trends throughout the fall.
Let’s get a closer look at these trends and find out what DHS has been wearing instead.
In the Dries Van Noten show, the designer portrayed how the seemingly “basic” blazer can be worn in unique ways. In the photo above, Model Malgosia Bela wears the blazer as a coat over a sweater; introducing a new way to incorporate them into one’s daily style.
This show inspired celebrities and fashion lovers. After the fashion week, many celebrities were seen in blazers and were wearing them in all sorts of styles. For example, Actress Jennifer Lawrence dressed down the blazer at “The Contenders” with a white t-shirt and comfortable jeans. Lawrence portrays how blazers are so effortless yet fashionable.
Regardless of how popular they have been in the “real world” and how versatile they are, students at DHS passed on the blazer and kept warm this past fall with sports jackets and denim jackets instead. Sports teams apparel are very popular at DHS and throughout the fall are constantly seen on game day.
Senior and field hockey player Kendall Wisinski discussed sports jackets with me and their use of them. Wisinski said, “On game days, sports teams such as field hockey wear team apparel like our coats because we feel a great sense of pride as we represent our hard work and our town.” These coats have a great meaning to the players, as well as keep them warm on cold fall days.
Senior Katy Read discussed the other popular coat this fall at DHS; the denim jacket. Read said, “Denim jackets are fashionable but warm and make an outfit look effortless. For a school outfit, denim jackets are perfect to throw over a shirt- blazers feel too official and business-like.”
Double denim, another trend of fashion week, was best seen in Calvin Klein’s show. Model and style icon Bella Hadid often emulated this style on the streets and portrayed how versatile the double denim look can be. She was often seen wearing a denim jacket over a sweatshirt and comfortable denim jeans.
DHS almost reached this trend, but not quite. Denim jeans were the closest the females of DHS got. These are a trend seen every year throughout Fall and Winter at DHS and have been a classic article of clothing for decades. In the photo above, Senior Julia O’Brien wears jeans with a sweatshirt, showing a comfortable fall look.
Another trend that was highlighted in fashion week through Prada’s show was Captain’s Hat’s. Captains hats can be dressed up or dressed down. In the Prada show, model Aira Ferreira wore one with a dress, yet public figures such as Kendall Jenner show it can be dressed down on the streets with jeans, a t-shirt, and a coat.
Students at DHS completely missed this trend. If boys wear baseball hats, why haven’t girl’s been wearing hats too? Realistically, now would be the perfect time to wear one as it is a very popular trend. However, I saw nothing of the sorts.
Instead of wearing a hat, the typical accessory at DHS this fall were letter necklaces. These stand out because they are different from the typical jewelry consisting of a chain and a small gem. These necklaces have large letters in the center of them which is typically the first letter of the owners name. Senior Katy Read owns one of these. Read said, “These necklaces make an outfit more fun and are different to all the other jewelry I own.”
Even though the fall is almost over, these trends are still seen on celebrities and fashion icons. This winter is DHS students’ chance to redeem themselves in the eyes of the fashion geniuses. You can incorporate these fall trends into your winter style to help DHS live up to Calvin Klein and Alexander Wang’s expectations.
