Sweetgreen: Overhyped or Underrated?

Kiara Luciano, Social Media Manager

New in Darien Commons, Sweetgreen has been open for about two months now. One of the more frequented shops in the shopping center, Sweetgreen offers salads, bowls, and more.

Perhaps the 1,008 different Sweetgreen locations open – and more coming soon – can tell us something about what to expect.

Sweetgreen Harvest Bowl
Sweetgreen’s Harvest Bowl with chicken, roasted sweet potatoes, goat cheese, apples, roasted almonds, warm wild rice, shredded kale, and balsamic vinaigrette (Sweetgreen)

One of the most popular warm bowls offered was the “Harvest Bowl”. Made with chicken, roasted sweet potatoes, goat cheese, apples, roasted almonds, warm wild rice, shredded kale, and balsamic vinaigrette, the Harvest Bowl is a nice surprise of flavors you might not think go together but do. Sold for $13.95, I wouldn’t recommend this as an everyday meal, but more as an every-now and-then purchase for when you want to treat yourself to something yummy.

Like most – if not all of their items – customers can customize to their preferences what they’d like in their bowl or salad. Most recognizable at Chipotle, companies have started to focus on a customize-your-own approach, and Sweetgreen is following that model. Their Custom Bowl option allows you to pick 2 bases, 10 toppings, 5 premium items, and 3 types of dressings. The base bowl price is $9.95 but as you add items that are a bit more, it adds up.

My custom bowl consisted of the bowery spring mix, raw carrots, warm wild rice, cucumber, shredded cabbage, tomato, and roasted chicken with balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. It came out to be $13.45, but it was worth it, with the veggies, chicken, and balsamic vinaigrette working together perfectly to please my tastebuds. I would definitely recommend this option for anyone who has a hard time making a decision when someone ask “What do you want to get?”

Junior Caroline Young says their favorite part about Sweetgreen is that their friend works there and “when he makes my salads he puts his heart and soul into it”. Junior Rachel Greca enjoys the Chipotle Grain Bowl with the Hibiscus Berry Clover Tea.

Overall, Sweetgreen doesn’t seem like an everyday indulgence but more of a healthy pick for every now and then. I am excited to return to Sweetgreen to try more of their bowls and some of their limited-time items!
